Monday Makeover?

20121105-172550.jpg
I say makeover. This is kinda a make-under. Or a make backwards? Or a kiss and make up.
I changed the layout of the website a few weeks ago. Super sleek. Super shiny. Super magaziney.
Turns out you didn’t like it.
Fair enough.
I changed it back.
You know what you like and you’re not afraid to tell me. I like that about you.
I love reading your comments and tweets. I love feedback! Give me more. Tell me what you want. (Not you, Kathy! You can’t just keep asking for more pyrotechnics!)
There is a new contact page somewhere at the top of the site with a mega image of inside BOTD Towers head office (I’ll pause while you go and click). And you know you can find me on Twitter as @barbieoftheday. For those crazy folk not on Twitter, (crazeballs) or not friends with me on Facebook, I’ve added a mini Twitter feed over on the right had side so you can see my latest martini fuelled ramblings on everything from the latest collections to who is wearing what in my gym, what the postman has brought me and of course my “legendary” X Factor commentary.
Speak soon?

Getting Wiggy With It

20121024-144431.jpg
Woah, Donatella stayed too long on the sunbed.
No wait. It’s okay. It’s just Grace raiding the BOTD wig cupboard. What do you mean you don’t have a wig cupboard?
I love a good wig. And I love a bad wig even more. With Halloween just around the corner my thoughts obviously turn to which wig for which witch?
Not that the wig cupboard only opens up in October. Wigs are all the rage it seems, with stars much more confident about wig wearing and coming clean about. Wear your wigs with pride, people. And I say people, I mean girls and dolls.
I remember not so long ago people being shocked that Beyoncé’s hair was not Beyoncé’s hair at all but a Latvian street worker lovely shiny wig. Wait, Naomi Campbell wears a wig too? But I thought black girls had naturally poker straight floor length tresses? And Tyra? And Tina? And Katy Perry? And Gaga? Surely not Gaga? Really? OMG!
Thank goodness Adele and Nikki Minaj are so much more up front about up top.
Anyway… Back to the show.
I decided to do a best (and worst) of the wigs. Since Grace got the Chop it seemed like the perfect mission for this model.
So this is where we started…

20121024-145626.jpg
So our first wig was our old faithful, the Liza Cabaret bob…

20121024-145737.jpg
As seen in stories featuring such names as Tyra, Lea Michele, Cheryl, The Winkleman and also as our Cabaret girl for our Berlin special a couple of years ago.
And What about this Mel B number?

20121024-151400.jpg
Next up, the Betsey Johnson. Not one of my best fringes but…

20121024-150124.jpg
And the Gaga Banana as worn by Gaga and possibly Minaj.

20121024-150243.jpg
And one of about five Cheryl weaves…

20121024-150359.jpg
And another… Also seen on Naomi. This was for our big X Factor USA shoot as well as L’Oréal’s hairspray shoot….

20121024-150631.jpg
Ooh and underneath that one I just found this Fifth Element Jean Paul Gaultier number. Makes me think of Sarah Harding circa Call The Shots…

20121024-150835.jpg
Classy. Speaking of classy. Minaj part deux…

20121024-150946.jpg
Please note the subtle change of make up.

20121024-151052.jpg
Anyway. I think Grace has probably had enough so… Wait. What’s this? A mini Afro extension bought in Palm Springs on the BOTD USA Tour?

20121024-151307.jpg
Try it on then!

20121024-151506.jpg
Erm…

20121024-151535.jpg
No no no!

20121024-151609.jpg
Give it here!

20121024-151646.jpg
Gorgeous. Or you could just be one of those bald chicks that’s all about the earrings….

20121024-151737.jpg
What’s your fave, doll lovers?
Have a wicked wiggin’ Wednesday.

Seeing Red!

20121112-095140.jpg
You know how you flick through a magazine and see an ad featuring Kate Moss? Then two pages later there is another ad for something different, but featuring Kate Moss? Then another!
So it’s another Grace day today after all that wig action yesterday. Why? Just because. We may have seen loads of her in different guises yesterday but we haven’t seen this military jacket in ages. Military is back. It never went away. Bla bla bla.

Chop

This post has been a long time coming!
I know makeovers are normally covered on makeover Monday but if I don’t write about my hair now then I never will.
There are times when you know you need a little trim and times when you know it’s a makeover day.
This is how I felt a couple of weeks ago.
I’m not sure what the catalyst was…

20121017-162856.jpg
At the MTV VMAs P!nk and Miley Cyrus stepped out with matching peroxide quiffs with the sides shaved off. Not since Jedward….

20121017-162943.jpg
….has the red carpet seen such double trouble. Don’t get me wrong. I heart Miley. But I don’t need a new tween twin. This is mainly due to the fact that I have a twin. I’ll let you decide if she is indeed my evil twin or whether I’m the evil one…
Me doing Olympic chic…

20121017-165913.jpg
Okay okay, you get the picture. Where was I?
Oh yeah. So then Rihanna cut off all her hair. I say cut off. I think we all know it was one weave/dye job too many and it all dropped off.
So it got me thinking, why don’t I go for a serious chop? Well this required serious discussion at my hairdressers, Kult. Do we cut out all the blonde? Ca va être un peu militaire, non?
Quite possibly, but my roots were such that… Well anyway I had it all cut off. And it’s taken me so long to write this bloody post that it’s grown back. A bit.
But I don’t look like Emeli Sandé anymore. Or Rihanna. And no more Barbie blonde!

20121017-170647.jpg
So who/what do I look like?

So Long Sassoon

My first “posh haircut” was at Vidal Sassoon in Leeds. Ah those heady, modelling days of blunt fringes and aubergine lowlights. Alas it was the 90s, a time before cameras existed so you will be spared the gorgeousness of it all. I was quite sad to hear of Vidal Sassoon’s death (despite my fringe). It always takes a death to realise how prolific someone has been.
I was fortunate enough to have downloaded the podcast of Sassoon’s appearance on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs last year, just before Christmas. I listened and chuckled and sang along in the bath in Egypt. That and the fringe will be my main memories of Vidal Sassoon. You can listen (and chuckle) by clicking here. In his honour I have given Grace a brutal crop. Brutal but beautiful thanks to her amazing bone structure. Brutiful!

Grey Day

While the lovely lasses in Liverpool were all about bright dresses and brighter tans in Aintree yesterday, a severe downpour has left us feeling a little grey at BOTD Towers. Seaside towns in the rain can be so depressing and when the Côte d’Azur is transformed into the Côte de Gris, the dolls start to feel a little sad. The best way to feel better is of course to dress up, put on some slap and go out on the town. I think they make a pretty handsome couple too. Sure, Amber’s strappy Louboutins aren’t ideal for puddles but I’m thinking door to door, here.

Back to Business

Finally! The world is returning to work today after what seems like an endless holiday. It feels like forever since we got a business related email so it’s good to get back in the saddle, even if we are still existing in a mobile version of BOTD Towers. The dolls are going back to work in style, in fabulous fabrics and grown up tailoring. We’re starting 2012 as we mean to go on, in all out glitz and glamour. Don’t be fooled by the glitter. BOTD means business this year.

A New Face

Meet Grace, the latest addition to BOTD Towers. A new face for the New Year, Grace is part of the So In Style series of dolls, created by the fabulous Stacey McBride-Irby and designed to look more authentically African-American. Although she has already had to undergo the traditional Barbie of the Day makeover of makeup stripping, hair trimming and a brand new wardrobe, it’s all part of the process of becoming a top mo-doll.
I think she will make a brilliant new recruit and I’m pleased that she is a step towards a more diverse BOTD team.
