Rolling in the ****

20120222-130358.jpg

Imagine it happening to Meryl! You’re halfway through an acceptance speech for the biggest award of the night and someone says “sorry to interrupt but I’ve got a band from the past due on at five to and a bus to catch after that so…”
Poor Adele! Her speech began by saying how proud she was to be British and ended with me thinking, jeesh, only in Britain. Only on ITV. I know people had paid for their ads but really. And Blur still had a song cut. Probably their best song. It left a very sour taste in the mouth. It makes you wonder what else we’ll do in this great British year. Cut the 100m finals 90 metres in? Wait until the queen is halfway through her speech and say, “soz, ma’am, there’s an EastEnders special on, we’ll have to switch you to BBC3.”

The Front Row

20120221-114934.jpg

There are shows and then there are shows! McQueen knew this more than anybody and has influenced fashion weeks and fashion shows the world over. Christopher Bailey at Burberry knows how to put on a show. The clothes at yesterday’s spectacular were gorgeous. Of course they were. He is a bit of a genius. But we knew they were going to be gorgeous. Luxury bags and coats. It’s what they do. But the spectacular element was of course the rain on the glass ceiling and the snow on the catwalk. So far, so amazing. But what really makes a Burberry show isn’t the clothes or the spectacular. Everybody knows the company survives on its perfume sales and Burberry check scarves and purses being sold in China. What makes the show fabulous is the front row. We all know who was at yesterday’s event but if you could choose your own fantasy front row, who would be invited? BOTD takes a look at our own guest list…

Hair

20120220-133030.jpg

Mulberry showed us Where The Wild Things Are yesterday, or should that be yeti-day? Models were sent down the catwalk in huge furry gorilla-like coats inspired by the children’s book. I love me some fur so couldn’t wait to recreate the looks, Barbie of the Day style.

20120220-134207.jpg
Other highlights for me included gorgeous black cocktail dresses with sexy leather bustiers and lacy details and a beautiful orange number with a tangerine satin bra over more lace. Yum yum!

Houndstooth, Hats, HOH and Hooters

More from London Fashion Week today, starting with Princess Catherine’s fave, Issa.

20120219-140618.jpg

I’m not entirely sure our future queen will dare to bare so much flesh but perhaps Pippa will have a go.
Meanwhile, over on Henry Holland’s catwalk there was a lot of big bright pattern. You all know how much I like a bit of houndstooth so I was thrilled to see plenty here in rainbow brights.

But I think my fave was this gorgeous leather dress…

20120219-141217.jpg

In other news I spotted something of a micro trend developing for furry hats. Alice Temperley sent all her models down the runway in fuzzy Russian numbers and they were spotted on various other catwalks.

Highland Fling

I hate bagpipes. Always have. I think of Ross in Friends practicing for Monica and Chandler’s wedding. Remember? So when Corrie Nielsen’s models were piped onto the catwalk yesterday on day one of London Fashion Week, I had a sinking feeling. Uh oh! Scottish themed! Haven’t we seen that done unbeatably by McQueen and constantly by Vivienne Westwood? Even BOTD has done tartan before.
Well I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. Scottish but not too Scottish. Gothic but not too gothic. A little bit Victorian and totally theatrical. A really beautiful collection from a fabulous British designer.

Here Comes Another Bride

20120216-102821.jpg

A bit of bridal for your breakfast this morning at Barbie of the Day today. Mattel have released a brand new pair of dolls to celebrate the first anniversary of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, available to pre-order from today. Kate wears a beautiful replica of the Alexander McQueen gown she wore back in April last year.

20120216-103201.jpg
Sure she would have looked better wearing what BOTD made for her but what can you do. The Mattel design is a million times better, at least, than the terrifying dolls sold in Hamleys.

Papped, Snapped and Doll-Napped

20120215-094515.jpg

We tend to watch most awards ceremonies from the comfort of our sofa so we were delighted to be invited to the Elle Style Awards held at The Savoy on Monday night. Amber and Beyoncé glammed up to walk the red carpet.

20120215-094538.jpg

The girls posed and pouted alongside fashion royalty and Hollywood starlets, Jessica Chastain, Christina Ricci, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Tali Lennoxand Alexa Chung. We were most excited to see Mad Men and Drive star, Christina Hendricks. And guess what. She was most excited to see us…

20120215-095414.jpg

It was love at first sight when Christina met her dolly doppelgänger, Amber and she was happy to pose with Barbie of the Day’s leading lady on the red carpet. Christina was a real doll and is officially my new best friend.

Well with all this excitement, Amber and Beyoncé decided to hit the party…

We sipped passion fruit and chili martinis and doll sized bottles of Moët and threw some shapes on the gold-plated dance floor under copper palm trees and a golden disco ball.

20120215-100648.jpg

The dolls danced to classic Whitney with Alexa and Rosie while the irresistible David Gandy looked on (desperate to join in, I’m guessing). That’s when things got a little cray cray. A crazed “fan” decided to take Amber for a spin on the dance floor. And then… Disappeared into the night. WITH MY DOLLS! Not to mention my very masculine new grey clutch bag. I was absolutely gutted and nobody knew who this guy was or what he was doing there or where he had taken my girls or my bag. A search team was deployed and the doll stalker was apprehended by the Savoy’s security team (no, I mean it. This all happened!) and the dolls were reunited with me. It was a pretty scary moment but the dolls focused on the positives. They met some fabulous people from Elle. Some crazy people from fashion land and of course the beautiful Christina. Beyoncé was last seen trying to drive the Godiva chocolate train back to France….

Awards Awards Awards

Ok so this is all gonna be a bit of a rush but bear with me. As you know. I love to give you your Barbie with breakfast or at the latest, with elevenses but today I’m running late as I’m dashing around trying to pack a bag and decide what the dolls are going to wear to the Elle Style Awards tonight. So far,so glamorous. The thing is, I’m back in France. Woop woop. Home Sweet Home, right? Well yes, it’s lovely to have been back in BOTD Towers on the Côte D’Azur over the weekend, but duty calls and I simply must go back to Londontown and now I have a flight to catch.
So back to the awards. Which ones? So many to choose from. Well we’ll start with the Grammys which was all a bit of a sob-fest for Whitney. Adele scooped all the awards as predicted and looked pretty amazing. I’ve not watched any of the performances (due to the packing, remember?) but I did hear J-Hud (she’s known as that, right?) belting out a tribute. Love her. So from what I’ve seen, nobody arrived in a giant plastic egg though Minaj did show up with a Pope-a-like. I’ve only seen one picture of Gaga, disappointingly and she’s wearing a pair of fishnets on her head and some black plastic carrier bag over her boobs. She’s also got a big stick which may or may not be a giant roll of bin bags.
But Rihanna looked nice…

20120213-113319.jpg

I’m loving this Rod Stewart chic she’s rocking at the moment. Leave the clown hair to Katy Perry. (KP call me. Let’s bleach it out together)

Meanwhile, back in London (the awards, not me, I’m still in France, packing and curling my hair, remember?) Christina Hendricks’ breasts arrived on the red carpet about 20 minutes before she did.

20120213-113841.jpg

Unsurprisingly she wore Westwood and unsurprisingly she looked sexy as hell. Meryl also wore Westwood which I thought was a really good look for her.
Another great look was Livia Firth who rocked up in a skinny tuxedo.

20120213-114027.jpg

Great make up, a tight ponytail. Très chic. Apparently she convinced The Help’s Viola Davis to wear a Roberto Cavalli dress made from Colin’s recycled awards.

20120213-114302.jpg

She looked fab and was a refreshing burst of colour on a pretty monochrome night. She ain’t in mourning but she’d be great as Whit in a biopic, right?
Anyway. Taxi to the airport. I’ll take my curlers out on the plane. X
